Here’s something interesting, for all you RPers who ever had a chance to question Steve’s religious denomination/affiliation. All you need to know is in his tags.
The ones shown above are the official dog tags Chris Evans wore from Captain America: The First Avenger. (You can see them swinging when he dives for the dummy grenade, for example.)
Want to know how to read them? It’s pretty simple:
First Name, Initial, Surname
Serial #, tetanus, toxoid, blood type
Next of Kin
Address for next of kin
Address, Religion
Note that little ‘P’ down in the bottom right of the tag.
Steve is Protestant.
We don’t know which denomination, but we do know he isn’t Catholic or Jewish. During World War II, there were only three religions represented on soldier’s dog tags: “During World War II, a dog tag could indicate only one of three religions through the inclusion of one letter: “P” for Protestant, “C” for Catholic, or “H” for Jewish (from the word, “Hebrew”),or (according to at least one source) “NO” to indicate no religious preference.” [Source]
Also, for extra heartbreak, note the lack of address. Steve was alone, completely alone. He had no next of kin, save for perhaps Bucky, and because Bucky was already enlisted, there’s no next of kin or permanent address on the dog tag.

And this is why when people prompt shit with “homophobic” Steve Rogers on kink memes, I want to punch them in the face.(From Captain America #270 - June 1982)
This is Captain America meeting up with an old friend, Arnie Roth. Though the word “gay” is never used (incredibly awful censorship), it’s pretty obvious Michael is his partner (he stumbles to say they are “rooming” and that they are “friends”, but later canon has firmly established they are in a relationship).
Michael is abducted by the Red Skull, and at the end, the Red Skull mind controls Arnie, forcing him to say that he is a freak and doesn’t know anything about real love.
Cap breaks him out of this, and says “You are not a freak! You are as good and decent a man as I’ve ever known! They can’t corrupt your love for Michael with their lies… They’re the disease!”
I keep having to tell people: Captain America is the kind of patriotic I can SO get behind. You tell’em, Cap!
Put this on parallel with Chris Evans openly saying he’s 100% pro LGBTQ rights, and it’s even more awesome. Both comic!Steve and his actor are great in this sense.
And damn, people really do that in the kinkmemes? D: I’m not even in the Avengers fandom, and yet I still think it’s Le Shitty.
Please note that this is way back in 1982 as well. It’s funny because people think that because Captain America is Captain America he’s this jingoistic and stereotypical patriot, but that could not be further from the truth. Cap is shown to be VERY, VERY socially progressive on many, many occasions and this has been the case since at least the 70s.
But yeah the homophobic Steve prompts? Can gtfo.
MMM hm! Always like to see Steve presented in character: maybe a little taken aback by the lingo or the degree of openness in present day (the only way my heart can wrap around the fact that he can’t “bring himself” to say ‘gay’ in the comics), but eventually like “cool, thumbs up”
